These are temporary photos for the blog, I will take some better images for my portfolio when we get the work back after hand in. Got a snap of Yaf taking a little flick through, putting it slightly more into context is how I intend on photographing the prints after the hand in.

Final Layout

This is the final layout, but not in any particular order just yet. I don't think the cover is really suitable and doesn't particularly make the most of the printed format

Poster Designs

Posters to be printed on a similar coloured stock to this green - A1 , I will make some more mocked up images before the final hand in.

First Page

I wasn't happy with the first page on the last issuu document of the book, I don't fell it was fitting with the rest of the project and was in-effective when printed out on a black and white laser printer. These are my reworking of the pages to be printed on A4 and placed over the A3 prints revealing the first page of patterns, and integrating with the geometric shapes on the page below. The top image is the final front page that I decided on using, it will be printed on yellow stock so it will only be black ink on the page but I wanted this copy on my blog as a better reference to the current colour scheme.

Mock Up Ideas

I wanted to experiment with the size formats before committing to print, these are a selection of the different layouts / books that I experimented with before eventually choosing the A3 bound format. I was also exploring different tones of voice / concepts.

These books also explore some of the different ways of playing with negative space on the page / the relationship between pages and typeface choices. The colour in the book will come from the choice of stock. I decided a sans serif typeface was more appropriate with running themes of form follows function throughout the book.

Re-worked

Forgot to post this, the final version of my rain poster mocked up. I will try and get an A2 printed out before the hand in but I don't feel its that vital given the nature of the brief.

Distorting

I wanted the photos to be as representative of the actual patterns on the drains as possible so I did a bit of editing to get the scales from a birds eye view. Also good to get back into photoshop realising its actual potential, I will do some more experiments with the images to see what other results I can produce.

Patterns

Using a selection of primary and secondary sources the pages of my book are finally starting to come together. I will keep all the text on tip in pages and possible use a different stock, this should provide some clarity and information about the content of the book. I have really tried to explore the idea of deconstructing the designs, I have illustrator files with hundreds of patterns which I will upload after, they make the process of creating each pattern / graphic much clearer.

A Brief checklist of what I have left to do
- Write a brief paragraph for the first page in the book
- Create poster designs using the most effective / communicative designs
- Re-develop some of the patterns
- Design cover

Experiments

My experiments are starting to take me into more of a deconstruction /reconstruction of the drain forms. I haven't decided on my choice colour yet, black and white seems like a relevant choice but I could consider integrating different greys / tones / tints. Also need to start thinking about format - possibilities are - self published zine / newspaper / series of posters - How can I extend these ideas into motion graphics or other such areas?

Essentially its a visual study but I don't know if that's enough of a concept- need to define the problem that I am solving.

These are a few of the re-worked photos, I'm really not happy with them, they are over contrasted and not as sharp as I feel is necessary, luckily I have taken a new direction with my book leaving these photos as my source of research rather than images for the final book. The file below is a PDF of the rest of the images taken that day, all studying the different geometric shapes and forms of industrial design.

Air Vent

This is the sort of structures I have been looking at, still building up my library of images but will keep posting them in issue documents, this pattern particularly grabbed my attention. I will continue recreating the patterns working towards a possible book or poster formatted set of deliverables.

More Experiments

Some more digital experiments, starting to create some interesting results, and tying into my context work slightly more. I am exploring the anatomy of form hopefully I can keep progressing with this work but maybe moving into different subject areas. I am quite happy to keep it reasonably abstract at the moment as long as the final designs communicate the ideas without an explanation.

Experiments

Trying to gain a visual direction towards this project working with some sample photos and some of my own. This is my computer orientated development but I still want to continue with a more hands on approach as I have used a lot of computer orientated development through this module. Some interesting results none the less - particularly on the last page (top image) where I experimented with distorting the lines, the images become to arty and almost like the work of Dali and his melting clocks, I will continue my research to develop my concept / ideas.

Edit

I have been reworking all the photos of my work ready to work on my website when we return after Easter, this is an example of one of the ways I have developed the existing images.
