OUGD301 ~ Self Evaluation
Through this module I have been able to explore areas of design that I was less familiar with such as packaging and typeface design allowing me to refine my principles and areas of specialism. I am confident in my individual approach to design, with a focus on collaborative practice, typography, layout and publication design. Also the varied scales of brief and subject matters has allowed me to develop my conceptual research and practice for different outputs.
The briefs I have set myself have allowed me to produce work that is relevant to my proposed positioning in industry, as well as giving me ample room to experiment with different concepts and processes. The majority of the products and design that I have produced has relevant and informed through the investigation of audience, point of sale, practical investigation and contextual exploration of surrounding topics.
It has allowed me to work on successful collaborations as well as my individual practice. It has helped me develop my professional practice opening a variety of opportunities during the remainder of the course and post graduation. It has enabled me to focus a division of my time towards freelance and professional work, building on existing relations and develop new ones. This is ample is my progression from a student to professional, understanding communication and presentation of ideas to clients.
My confidence in articulated analysis of graphic design as well as my own practice has made significant improvements, but could be condensed into a compact and more direct form. My knowledge and understanding of the history of typography in particular has developed through dissertation research and practical use, this will help inform my use and understanding of typography as a professional practice.
Through plenty of to do lists and time lines I have been able to manage the majority of my time efficiently. However due to a lack of decisiveness in my bookshop brief I limited the possibly deliveribles and full scope of the brief. I also feel that had I organised my time more wisely I could have extended the briefs to create design that existed outside the studio. I am however confident, that a few of my briefs, the typography sketchbooks in particular, could have a wider scope to extend through into my FMP.
My blogging has been consistent and essential in my development, allowing me assess and evaluate my work in relation to feedback and current design trends. Each project has stemmed from appropriate research and practical development whether this be surrounding publication design, typography, branding or typography.
The experimentation within the majority of the briefs has been successful and lead me to appropriate outcomes for each. I have however, acknowledged that through collaboration and discussion with others my work often takes unexpected turns that result in possibly more exciting outcomes. This will be a focus on my work for FMP, to really get the most of a brief feedback and consistent conversion with others is crucial for the development of my practice.
The main failure within this module surrounded my book brief ~ because I spent so much time deciding what the bookshop was about, I dedicated too little time towards working on the finished identity. I do however feel confident that my research has lead me to develop my knowledge of branding for future projects. Another for improvement include my crafting skills, I must make sure I don't rush the production stages to assure high quality end results that are portfolio ready.
I am hugely disappointed with how the bookshop brief turned out but feel I have learnt a great deal about how to approach the branding process. It is something that I am comfortable with but wasn't happy with the brief in the initial stages and neglected it, this is why I only have two final boards.
Another aspect of this module that I let myself down on was the organisation towards the end, I need to be more organised with photographing and printing boards. There is too much visual inconsistency between some of the boards, I will need to work on this before putting any work into my portfolio to deliver the right message about my work.

Bibliography
I completly forgot about including a bibliography but luckily I have been sourcing bits and bobs on the way. I have been using a wider range of sources this module that ever before and I have started to appreciate the value of this, although its possible to survive using only web, magazines and books often offer far more in depth analysis of projects and pieces of design, not to mention the progress my theoretical understanding has improved through reading books this year. To list all of the web links that I have sourced would take a week but I will remember this for FMP.
